Case study: Canva & Skolon – Empowering creativity at scale

Author: Amber Lovell

How Canva and Skolon are redefining EdTech access across Europe
Canva, the world’s leading visual communication platform, aims to make design accessible to every student and teacher, regardless of their ability and level of creativity.
However, with a global mission, the manual overhead of verifying teacher credentials and managing data security across different regions posed a significant challenge for both user and creator.
By partnering with Skolon, Canva has streamlined user provisioning, ensured world-class data compliance, and successfully expanded its footprint from the Nordics into the UK, Spain, and Germany.
For Canva, the challenges were three-fold:
Verification Bottlenecks: Manually verifying individual teacher statuses is time-consuming and slows down adoption.
Technical Fragmentation: Different markets (like Germany) often use non-standardised data formats, making Single Sign-On (SSO) implementation difficult.
Resource Constraints: Limited development resources meant that smaller or more complex markets were often underserved.
The solution: A strategic and technical partnership
Skolon stepped in not just as a technical bridge, but as a trusted advisor. By integrating with Skolon’s platform, Canva was able to outsource the heavy lifting of data management and technical onboarding to Skolon’s in-house technical team.
1. Seamless Technical Integration
Canva’s authentication methods are often fixed, which can be a blocker in certain markets. Skolon took the lead on the development work, ensuring that data was cleaned and standardised before reaching Canva.
The Result: Canva can now “switch on” access for entire school trusts instantly, without worrying about the underlying identity provider setup.
2. Advanced Class Provisioning
The partnership goes beyond simple login access. Skolon enables automated class provisioning, meaning when a teacher logs into Canva for the first time, their student lists are already populated.
The Impact: Higher engagement levels. Teachers can start collaborating with students on day one, rather than spending weeks setting up digital classrooms.
3. Data Privacy and Security
In regions like the UK, the Nordics and Germany, data protection is paramount. Skolon’s established reputation as a secure platform provided the intel and advice Canva needed to navigate local GDPR requirements and gain the trust of local authorities.

The results: Growth without friction
The partnership has evolved from a Nordic-centric collaboration into a pan-European success story.
Rapid Market Expansion: After seeing success in Sweden, the partnership has seamlessly scaled to the UK, Spain, and Germany.
Efficiency at Scale: Skolon handles the manual support and data troubleshooting, allowing the Canva team to focus on their core mission: pedagogy and product impact.
Improved Learning Outcomes: Because the technical barriers are removed, schools report higher usage rates and a more meaningful focus on reimagining learning in the classroom.
“Working with Skolon means that we can finally focus on driving impact. They take care of the access conversations so we can focus on delivering the impact we built the tool to do.” — Matthew Jordan, Canva Education Team
Looking ahead
As Skolon continues to grow into new territories, Canva plans to move alongside them. The single bit of development work done at the start of the partnership has unlocked a scalable gateway to millions of users across Europe, ensuring that quality educational resources remain a universal right.
