As the importance of Cyber Essentials continues to grow, so too does the need to secure pupil data as a top priority for every school.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an absolute requirement to keep access safe and ensure your school remains compliant, but in all honesty, traditional 2FA wasn’t specifically designed with young learners in mind.

For example, if you, like I, have ever watched a five-year-old try to type a complex password or use a secondary authenticator app, you know how much valuable classroom/teaching time that can eat up. Therefore, we knew there had to be a better way to balance top-tier security with everyday classroom practicality.

Listening to our schools

At Skolon, we take great pride in staying ahead of the curve when it comes to evolving cybersecurity trends and compliance requirements. With the Department for Education (DfE) setting strict standards around data protection and MFA, we acknowledged a growing challenge in the shape of: “how do schools stay fully compliant without disrupting the learning experience for their youngest students?”

While this update was partly inspired by a conversation with one of our schools, who were already using Skolon Pass, our intuitive QR code login method, they told us that they desperately needed a smoother 2FA login experience for their youngest learners, which is when emoji-based logins for early readers entered the conversation.

From this, we saw an opportunity to step up and deliver exactly what they were looking for. We took their feedback, got to work, and engineered a solution that perfectly complements our existing platform and ensures that we offer the absolute best, most comprehensive tools for our users.

So, what’s new with Skolon Pass?

Well, September 2026 shouldn’t just mean new school shoes from Clarks and fresh white polos from M&S, because we’ve got something new to bring to the classroom too.

We’ve officially upgraded Skolon Pass to support 2FA using emoji logins, simple passcodes, and QR codes.

Here is why teachers and IT admins are going to praise this new workflow:

> Child-friendly visuals: Emojis and QR codes completely remove the barrier of text. Pupils can log in independently using a memorable, fun combination of pictures instead of struggling with keyboards.
> Super compliant: You get the peace of mind knowing you meet MFA requirements, keeping your school compliant and pupil data locked down.
> More teaching, less troubleshooting: Teachers can spend their mornings actually teaching, rather than resetting passwords or managing IT headaches for thirty kids at once.

Ready for the September rush

We have to give a massive shout-out to our incredible Skolon tech team. They took this challenge and solved it at an absolute lightning pace!

The feature is officially live, meaning we are completely ready to get your classrooms onboarded and rolling for the start of the September term.

We are always listening to what schools need to make classroom technology both safe and accessible, and we’re incredibly proud to deliver a solution that makes sense for students of all ages.

How does your school currently handle secure logins for your youngest students?
