Attender – Fast registration and lower student absence

2 February|

With the mission to save teachers’ precious class time by making attendance registration fast and fun, Attender motivates students with gamification and rewards to reduce absence and dropouts. Let’s learn more about Attender!

In Skolon’s library, among thousands of different tools, you can now find Attender. We spoke with Heine Jensen, CEO & Co-founder of Attender to hear how students and teachers can use Attender in their classrooms.

Heine, what is Attender and how does it work?

Attender’s mission is to save teachers’ precious class time by making attendance registration fast and fun and these are our key features:

Mark attendance faster and save time
Attender is built to make attendance registration fast. This ensures there is more time for teaching. We have 4 unique interfaces to mark attendance. And the option for students to use self-registration with QR codes.

Motivate students to attend with gamification
Attender uses gamification to motivate students to attend and rewards their presence with Attender Badges, Attender Streaks, Attender Coins and Attender Rewards.

Intelligent statistics
Attender contains intelligent statistics. Teachers see live statistics while they register. And our algorithm `Movers N´ Shakers`automatically shows you who you should take notice of.

Attendance registration anywhere
Attender is available in web, app and in Microsoft Teams. So, no matter where you are, you have easy access to Attender. This ensures absence registration can be done even if you are not in the classroom. Registration is made super easy via 4 different interfaces. You can register absences for a single lesson or for an entire day at a time.

Attender is also made for Microsoft Teams, so you do not need to change from one system to another. Attender can automatically mark attendance in online classes. This saves the teacher a lot of time.

Attender can also work with Google.

Who can use Attender?

Attender is built for all types of roles at a school. Teachers can mark attendance easy and track absence, while students can follow their own absence and earn rewards to motivate them to attend. Guidance Counselors, school leaders or admins can see intelligent statistics and guardians, parents or caseworkers can gain access to report students sick and see statistics.

Attender is built for all types of schools. Everything from primary schools and all the way to universities can use Attender. The built in settings of Attender makes it very easy to adapt Attender to your school type, needs, language and much more.

What are the opportunities for using your tool in teaching?

Attenders main goals are to make attendance registration easy and thereby freeing up more time that can be used for teaching. And we use gamification to motivate students to attend class and promote wellbeing. Students today respond better with motivation and encouragement.

Attender is also quite unique because by lowering the amount of dropout a school gets, the more money it gets. This also saves a lot of money for the state or municipality and ensures the student actually finishes an education. So Attender is not only a useful tool, there is also a great business case for it as well.

Why Attender is a part of Skolon:

We really like the vision of Skolon that schools can pick the tools that works best for them. Attender also chose to be a part of Skolon to make it is easier for schools to purchase and implement Attender.

BeyondLuna – improve the classrooms dynamics and study envi...

8 January|

With BeyondLuna, you can quickly and easily create the foundation for improving group harmony, both inside and outside the classroom, in combination with improved studies and study results. Stay tuned and we’ll tell you more!

In Skolons library, you will now find BeyondLuna, together with over 5,000 digital school tools and learning materials. A tool that helps teachers improve group dynamics in school. We had a chat and asked questions to Sara Arnell, a teacher and also product developer at BeyondLuna, to get to know the tool better.

Sara, for those who don’t know – how does BeyondLuna work?

BeyondLuna is a digital tool that helps teachers create good group dynamics and currently consists of 3 different modules: sociogram, self-assessment and classroom seating plan.

With the sociogram module, you never have to create a sociogram with paper and pencil again. By collecting the answers digitally, you can involve your students in a fun way. Do it either with your computer, tablet, phone or email by a link to the students so they can answer completely themselves via their device. The tool then helps you draw up a sociogram that simply gives you an insight and overview of how the relationships are within the group. It is easy to filter and visualise the different constellations of the group, but most important of all to identify which students are excluded.

In the self-assessment module, you can send out questions where the students can estimate their abilities and make personal rates on different topics. Its easy to follow up on the students answers, both at group level and individually. Since everything is saved digitally, you can easily go back and compare with previous estimates to see if the measures put in place helped. The collection is beneficial to combined with the collection of sociograms.

In the seating planning module you can have all your placements for different groups digitally stored in one place. Set up which rules should apply, for example which students should or should not be allowed to sit next to each other, and then let our generator optimize the classroom placement. If no rules are needed, a completely random placement is generated. Then export the placement as an image, either from the student’s or the teacher’s perspective. Perfect when a new group is meeting, when changing places or for substitute teachers.

Sounds like useful tools! But who can use BeyondLuna?

The tools suit you as a primary school teacher or your colleague who works with student health to help students with special needs. The questions for sociograms and self-assessment are created in the tools, which means that the field of use is almost unlimited. Likewise, the layout of the classrooms is designed in a design tool. This makes the tool as valuable for the teacher as for the students.

What possibilities are there in using your tool in teaching?

With BeyondLuna, you can quickly and easily create the basis for improving group harmony both inside and outside the classroom, with associated study relaxation and improved study results. This makes the tool useful in all subjects.

This is why BeyondLuna is part of Skolon:

To be able to reach out to users more easily, but also that we have seen how we supplement the existing library of tools in Skolon in a good way. We think Skolon seems to be a fantastic platform for teachers and students. We are convinced that this type of collective administration of students and class structures and common logins between all the school’s tools is necessary.

18 September|

Mindomo is a collaborative diagramming tool that helps students understand information easier, review and memorize knowledge, develop critical thinking, plan and write essay structures, take notes, synthesize courses, and prepare for exams. Let´s learn more about Mindomo!

In Skolon’s library, among all 5,000 different tools, you can now find Mindomo. We spoke with Silvana Carpineanu, marketing specialist at Mindomo to hear how students and teachers can use Mindomo in their classrooms.

Silvana, what is Mindomo and how does it work in school?

The software supports creating many types of diagrams, such as mind maps, concept maps, fishbone diagrams, timelines, bubble maps, outlines, etc. Each diagram can be customized by changing the structure, text, colors, and relationships. Adding multimedia files, such as images, links, documents, videos, and audio files.

Students can work in groups, collaborating on the same diagram and editing it in real-time. They also have access to a library with hundreds of templates, organized in categories for different subjects, for example geography, grammar, history, literature, etc. Teachers can create, share, review, and grade students’ assignments. They can also see a full history of changes made on a diagram by their students to evaluate each student’s contribution.

Moreover, they can give students timely feedback on their performance and clear guidance for improvement. Mindomo also has a grading report containing an overview of all the students’ grades. Each diagram can become a slideshow presentation for different projects the students may present to their colleagues.

What are the opportunities for using Mindomo in teaching?

Due to the ease of rearranging and restructuring the information, using Mindomo saves a lot of time for both students and teachers. Mindomo helps students understand and memorize information learned in class from any subject, making the whole process fun and engaging. This tool also develops students’ creativity and helps them identify connections between concepts. By creating diagrams, they also learn to synthesize and structure information.

Teachers can use Mindomo to explain concepts using the visual elements, help students develop critical thinking, decision-making, summarizing information, and evaluate how students understood the lessons. They can also use it to lay out lesson plans and prepare lectures for classes, as well as organize and manage their courses, exam materials, and more.

Who can use Mindomo?

Mindomo can be used by both students (from K-12 to university) and teachers. Students can create diagrams individually or collaborate in real-time with their classmates for group projects, assignments, or brainstorming sessions. Besides the predefined templates, students can create their own diagrams from scratch to take notes during classes, prepare for an exam, review and memorize information, plan and write essays, create book summaries, keep digital resources in one place to easily access them, etc. Teachers can use Mindomo to organize their academic work and resources, explain and present information to their students, prepare assignments, and evaluate and give feedback on students’ assignments.

Why Mindomo is a part of Skolon:

We believe that Mindomo is a highly effective teaching tool, and we wish for as many people to have access to it as possible. With Mindomo, teachers can easily manage students’ assignments, projects, and grades. For students, Mindomo becomes easily accessible from within the Skolon platform. With the partnership between Mindomo and Skolon, both teachers and students can easily access Mindomo and get all the benefits of the numerous features our tool offers.

Kubo – Playful coding

13 September|

Introduce the concept of algorithms and coding with KUBO Play, a digital coding platform that allows students to write algorithms for a virtual robot, providing a means for teachers to introduce coding and computational thinking in a virtual setting at school and encourage practice at home.

In Skolon’s library, among all 5,000 different tools, you can now find Kubo Play. We spoke with Helena González Antón, product manager at Kubo to hear how young students and teachers can use Kubo in their classrooms and introduce coding in a fun, interactive way.

Helena, what is Kubo play and how does it work in the school?

Before we start… Coding for preschool and elementary school is actually much simpler than you think! Believe it or not, a 5-year-old kid is already aware of the basic coding concepts, even if they don’t know what they are specifically.

In their daily routine, they all use coding concepts without even thinking about them! Every morning they: open their eyes, wake up, get out of bed and has a breakfast. By following this sequence in that specific order, they achieve the task of starting the day. Congratulations! Every morning 5-year-old kids are using the term “algorithm” by having an ordered sequence of steps to achieve a particular task.

An algorithm is an instruction given in order to complete a certain task and receive the desired result. And how is that related to KUBO Play?

In a digital coding platform designed for early-age students (age 4-10+) named KUBO Play, a 5-year-old kid will use the TagTile® pieces to write an algorithm which will tell KUBO, the virtual robot, how to perform a certain task to produce that result. With KUBO Play and the standard-aligned and detailed curriculum, teachers will be able to introduce coding and computational thinking in a virtual setting at school and let students practice their new skills at home!

What are the opportunities for using Kubo play in teaching?

With KUBO Play as a teacher:

  • You will support your students’ unique needs and abilities with customized learning pathways. Assign tasks and challenges, tailored to the student’s individual skill level and learning style.
  • Your students will have personalized 1:1 learning that ensures that children thoroughly comprehend each coding concept before moving on to the next one and that learning goals and milestones are met.
  • You have full support and access to our educational resources including curriculum, and cross-curricular activities which are combined with coding and computation thinking.
  • You will encourage inclusion and innovation in a whole new generation of kids which will develop 21st-century skills.

With KUBO Play as a student:

  • You will have fun while learning how to code.
  • You will have the chance to be creative and explore different stories.
  • You will complete different missions and earn coins.
  • You will have your individual login to continue your learning at home.

Who can use Kubo play?

KUBO Play is easy to use for teachers as well as preschool and elementary students. With Classroom Management (available here), teachers can manage their class, assign specific tasks based on students´ skills —and follow their individual and group progression. It is great for having a deeper understanding of the class´s level, the tasks that have been completed and the tasks that have challenged them.

In the classroom, every student is going through the same levels for in-classroom discussion. KUBO Play, also enables students to work from home at their own pace, space, and time. This is both an opportunity to increase parent involvement, increase time spent on coding, and allow students unable to participate in class to participate at home.

How does the tool work?

Through three different modes – Free Play, Practice, and Story Mode – students can explore functions, subroutines, loops, variables, conditions, events, and random behaviors.

In Free Play Mode, teachers present coding concepts while students familiarize themselves with the TagTile® pieces. Practice Mode offers personalized learning journeys for students to strengthen their coding skills at their own pace. Story Mode consists of 84 levels connected by a larger narrative, allowing students to connect coding with storytelling and soft skills. The platform also provides a curriculum aligned with educational standards for teachers to integrate coding into their lessons.

Why Kubo play is a part of Skolon:

Kubo play is a perfect match to go along with the Skolon interface. Skolon provides access to a wide range of digital educational tools for teachers to choose from, and for primary school Kubo play is for sure the way to go, being a part of a portfolio suited for the future classroom.
